Most of what shortens the life of a gel set happens at home, not in the chair. Water, dry cuticles, and using your nails as tools account for nearly every early lift and break. None of the fixes are complicated.

The first 24 hours

Gel is fully cured when you leave, so there is no drying time to wait out. Even so, the bond keeps settling for a day. Skip long hot baths, avoid scrubbing dishes bare-handed, and give your hands a quiet first night.

Daily habits that matter

Cuticle oil, every day

A flexible nail bends with impact instead of snapping. Oil at night is the single highest-return habit.

Gloves for wet work

Dishes, cleaning products, and long hot showers work water under the edges of product.

Nails are not tools

Open cans, scrape labels and pry lids with the pad of your finger or an actual tool.

Hand cream after washing

Frequent hand washing dries out the nail plate and the skin around it. Replace what it strips.

Things to avoid

  • Peeling or picking product off. This is the most common cause of thin, tender nails. It takes the top layers of your natural nail with it and can take months to grow out.
  • Filing an enhancement yourself. Home filing thins the structure and throws off the apex that keeps the nail strong.
  • Acetone soaks at home. Without proper technique this dehydrates the nail and the skin around it. Book a removal instead, from $30.
  • Stretching a fill past three weeks. As the nail grows, the balance point moves forward and breaks become far more likely.

When to come in

Book a fill every two to three weeks. Come in sooner if you notice lifting at the cuticle, a crack across the nail, or a corner that has caught on something. Small repairs are cheap and quick. Waiting until three nails have failed turns a repair into a full set.

Between enhancement cycles, taking a break is fine and sometimes a good idea. A gel overlay or plain gel polish gives your nails a lighter option without going bare.

Southern Utah specifics

Cedar City sits high and dry, and the air here pulls moisture out of skin and nails year round. Clients who move here from wetter climates often notice more hangnails and more brittleness in their first winter. Oil and hand cream matter more here than they would at sea level, and drinking enough water genuinely shows up in your nails.

Due for a fill?

Book before the lifting starts and keep your natural nails in good shape.
